"It's banter init, if you've got banter you're alright." - Rio Ferdinand, 2006
Apps: 5; Goals: 2; Assists: 1
This signing was significant for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's timing; J-dot offered an alternative, something new, something fresh and overall, a good foil for Wommy up front at a time when it was badly needed (Banter had just lost 4 from the last 5). Secondly, the question was then raised of: why hasn't he played for Banter sooner? Finally, we might also have signed someone who moans even more than his own brother.
When the elder of the Stewart brothers was eventually persuaded to have a few games for Banter, he certainly made an impact with some important goals and assists. He was asked to play in a somewhat unfamiliar role up front, normally preferring to play deeper in midfield. He and Wommy formed a quick partnership: quick in their passing and movement as well as adjusting to one another straight away.
Hard working and vocal, J-dot slotted into the side and scored on his debut with a fantastic performance in the 3-2 win over Sovereign. This was also memorable for the 4-2-4 formation employed and also that Banter had never beaten Sovereign in 4 previous attempts. J-dot then got in to score in his second game against Portland, which Banter were unfortunate to lose 2-1.
During the early stages of the 1-0 Santos win, there was moment of telepathy between he and brother Rod, when a pass from the younger of the two sent Jon straight through without a word's notice. With more playing time together hopefully this combination can be utilised more often. It was in this game too, that J-dot provided a crucial pass to Wommy for Banter to take the narrow victory. Having held the ball up well, he swivelled and picked his partner out with a lofted ball forward, which Wommy finished well.
J-dot played his role in the comfortable 3-1 win over Oakfield and 3-3 draw at Real Madras, before being substituted. Having lost just once, a good pre-season to get his fitness levels up and more playing time can only see him rise up this list come 2010.
